Everything in Santorini Tastes Better
Graced with the fertile volcanic soil, Santorini isn’t famous only for its magnificent landscape and the fantastic beaches. Local products are not found aplenty but they make up in quality and their rich flavor as strong winds, the dry soil and the high temperatures favor the growth of mouthwatering products.
Cherry tomato is Santorini’s most famous local product. Its small size encompasses a juicy interior and a rich, distinct taste. These cherry tomatoes only grow in Santorini and are classified as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). While in Santorini don't forget to buy some; they can be found in salads, as spoon sweets or canned.
The white eggplant found on the island outshines its purple sister. It has fewer seeds, featuring fruity and mild flavor while is significantly sweeter than the purple one. Find the white eggplant in a delicious paste called melitzanosalata and in one of the most famous Greek dishes, moussaka.
Like cherry tomatoes, split peas (fava) has also gained a PDO recognition. Fava can be found in almost every restaurant in Greece but the fava of Santorini has its own distinct flavor as its cultivation has a long tradition of 3,500 years. It’s mostly served as a puree and is garnished with herbs, onions and local capers.
While cherry tomatoes may are island's most delicious product and fava the eldest one but the real star is local wines which are also obtained a PDO status. Santorini is dotted with many vineyards which are infused with the properties of the volcanic soil. Many wine varieties stand out such as Assyrtiko, Nykteri and Vinsanto.
