Santorini’s Architecture: Timeless and Elegant
Over the years Santorini has emerged as a top destination for the holidaymakers. The sparkling waters, the majestic sunsets and its quintessentially tranquil setting merge perfectly with the island’s Cycladic architecture. Depicted exclusively in its whitewashed edifices and the beautiful churches that dot the island, Santorini features incomparable beauty. Perched on red volcanic cliffs or nestled in the narrow streets, the locations of the houses were cherry-picked to withstand the furry of strong winds and the pirate invasions.
The great village of Oia is widely known for its neoclassical mansions and the cobbled alleys. Fira’s location is quite impressive, as it stands proudly at the amazing caldera. From there visitors indulge in an otherworldly experience; watching the sunset from there is bliss. The ever-intriguing volcano offers bounteously a scenic backdrop that attracts people from all over the world.
Santorini’s capital showcases many examples of the local architecture that blends beautifully with the Venetian characteristics, like the arches, the vaults and the colorful stairs. The Venetian presence left its mark on several fortified settlements. Head to the Pyrgos village to admire the Kastro that remains intact while the Venetian Castle of Akrotiri is of equal importance.
Among the most notable architectural landmarks are the Catholic Cathedral of Fira, the Kasteli Castle and the Argyros Mansion. While on Santorini, don’t forget to visit the Folklore Museum. It will give you a deep insight into the 19th-century architecture. Roaming the charming villages of the island is also a great idea to capture the beauty found in its settlements.
